Web Security - How secure are your systems?

Web Security, why you should know about it.

About 10 years ago I did web consulting work for private individuals and small businesses, and I was amazed how little they knew about the Web and about online security.
I usually got called in when something went haywire, usually a virus.
People were doing online banking on the same computer or same network where their teenage son was visiting hacking sites or porn sites and opening all the doors of the system.
They would post photos of their homes and their family on the web, with lots of private information. I've seen one family showing when they would be off on holiday and the address of their home on the site.

I highly recommend that you spent some time reading about online security. It can insulate you from a lot of grief later on.
This Australian government site is very informative and easy to read.
There you will find explanations of;

  • anti-virus software
  • anti-spyware software
  • firewall
  • anti-spam filter
  • and important tips on how to keep your system safe.

I've used some of the tools on Gibson Research Center when I came across them long ago in Internet time. They are still there and their ShieldsUp feature is still there where you can test how vulnerable or open your Internet PC is, with some other nifty freeware programs to help protect your system.
